Canela, one of my two alpacas, has had a mouth foam problem since birth but we still do not know for sure what is causing it. Otherwise he is healthy.

There have been many suggestions given to me, including stomach ulcer and some sort of throat stricture. However the latter is generally associated with an animal that fails to thrive. Blood tests on this fellow do not indicate any problem with a bleeding ulcer at this point. We are still theorizing that there is something still not quite right in his bite for food grinding. The vet did float his back teeth. That was when the foam got really frothy and messy. Now, after several months, the foam is less and stiffer. I am still hoping that removing those points that the vet felt were the problem will eventually resolve the problem. If it does, I will certainly let people know.

Hi Nina

We have a few alpacas that mouth foam, otherwise healthy. I always think, oh, oh, they must have a tummy ache and will give Probios, but I'm not sure that it helps. I just figure it can't hurt. I wonder also, what causes it.

Yes, he seems to be thriving. We are monitoring it and at this point will probably not do anything more about it except that.

Nina,

Thanks for posting this! There are many thoughts on causes of the foam issue. From what I can gather, it's not life threatening as yours looks healthy :)
