Sherri-Lynn, This is not the same market as emus or ostrichs. The alpacas are DNA tested and the registry is closed to importation. The alpacas that are registered give rise to the next generation. It takes 15-24 months for a female to become able to breed, the gestation is 345-355 days, and they normally only have one cria. You have major tax advantages for raising this form of livestock recognized and declared by the Federal Government as such. The veterinarians and business people that started this industry and worked the importations are still in this business and the market prices have remained consistent for the last 20 years. You need to do more research on the internet on the background of this industry in order to be confident about your investment. By the best quality female you can afford. Be certain that they have had a cria and that they produce milk and have good mothering instincts. Don't buy all your animals from one farm. Diversify the purchases and be sure that the farm from which you purchase provides support services. I would recommend you look at Northwest Alpacas website and read all the articles. Also, purchase Dr. Norm Evans 3rd edition Field Manual and read it front to back. Also, attend a cria birthing seminar and any others offered in your area to enhance your knowledge and animal husbandry skills. This is a hands-on business and you need to be able to scoop poop, give shots, know when to call the vet and when to transport, and be able to do fecal testing and worm your animals. Knowledge is power in this business and we are not all wealthy. You finance these animals over time just like a car or home purchase and take the tax advantage. Jannette Cox Alpacas of the Smokies

Hi Sherri-Lynn,
Sorry I got confused I think someone was writing to you about selling their alpacas because they are retiring in a discussion. Oops sorry! So Where is your new farm? It is so overwhelming huh!? But, very Exciting!!!! Do you have animals already picked out? What are you going for? Hucaya/Suri, What color? Heritage? I have a guard llama at this point. I just have to send back my contract! But, No animals other than that yet! I can't wait to hear all about your plans!
Take Care & God Bless,

Maybe we can help... It took us about 7 years to decide and we had the farm already, and now 3 yrs later... no regrets.

Hi Sherri-Lynn,
Nice to have another future alpaca farmer on board! Your story sounds a lot like mine! We plan to raise alpacas as soon as we can sell our house and buy farm land. If that doesn't happen soon I may just put 2 in the back yard of my .79 acres here! LOL!
