My husband and I started with llamas in 1997, and added alpacas in 2003. We were living in New Mexico at the time, but have since moved to West Virginia. I am on the faculty of West Virginia University School of Medicine. I also give an annual lecture at WVU on bladder stones in South American camelids. Our farming goal is to introduce western bloodlines to the east, especially that of Champion Alpacas' Christopher-B. We recently started showing, and look forward to attending many more shows.
He sure is. I simply can not wait for this one to arrive! We visited the farm where he is and saw so many of his cria there...he's amazingly consistent in what he throws...density, brightness, and nice crimp structure on top of a perfectly balanced conformation! Totally exciting!
These color genetics are just crazy aren't they? You just never really know what you're going to get! I'm not sure what's more exciting for me...finding out if it's a boy or a girl, or seeing what color it's going to be!
Melanie, I do love my greys! I've been lucky so far that when I breed my grey female to a black male, I get grey! She's come through for me twice now and is due in the next 4-6 weeks bred to another black. We'll see if she keeps up her predictability. Well, I can's say it's science yet, she's only done this twice. She was bred to Axion Jaxon, and gave us Callaway Jaxon, then bred to LSH Woodrow, also black, and gave us Montana Silver, we bred her to a fawn after that and got a medium brown femail with black points. Now we've bred her back to another black, Strider of the Shire. I can't wait to see this cria! Strider is amazing.
Welcome to Missouri, Melanie. I went to school in Columbia, MO and pass through there every time I go visit family. There are quite a few alpaca owners in the Columbia area. I'll try and get a list together for you. Good luck with the move!
That's awesome that you're moving close by. Not REAL close but could be close enough! I'm sure WV will miss your farm and you too. But, welcome to Missouri! We're glad you're here! I look forward to getting to know you better.
Hiya Melanie,
Yep, my little brown/bay black girl is growing in true black under all that brown cria fuzz!! Am very pleased with that turn of events! It sure will keep me busy this spring! I will be showing 3 blacks! 2 boys and a girl! Then I can sit around until the last day to show my grey girl.....
Hey congrats on your grey girl! We too were supprised with a grey this year. I had the girls both bred to 2 different lt fawn males before I decided to go with black and grey :) this year's first cria came out brown ( what I figured she would be) but when we sheared her she is dark rose grey !!! and then when our other girl was born.... I couldn't believe my eyes! She is registered as bay black but I think she might be all black!
So we are very happy here this year! Crias are such fun! Cant wait til spring to see what the new batch will be!
