Laura, We feed all our animals grain. We use a formula developed by Dr Steve Hull ( Oklahoma) and produced by BlueBonnet. We used to use Mazuri also, but found Steve's formula has more nutrients for our area and as a result, all our animals look mu…

Rick, she was definitely not a maiden, but the tail hairs could have been an issue even though we move the tail, well, next year will tell for sure , So far, the stitch seems to have worked but again, we will not breed this year again with him. Tha…

This is a WILD guess: There was something that caused the swelling, not specifically related to the male. If you put him with a maiden, a tough hymen may have been the problem. If it's a huacaya, and the female's tail has lots of fiber, one could ha…

thanks Sandy and Maryann, our vet seems pretty good, as he does specialize in camelids rather than a good old country vet for horses and cows. We are in central Texas. I agree, his breeding days for this year are done, we wouldn't even put him in fo…

Jeff and Pam both had 20+ years in the computer industry when they decided that the hustle and bustle of suburbia was too much. So, off to the country they went buying 2 male alpacas to "try it out" Not long after, they were hooked into the business and set out to begin a fully functional ranch. Jeff now is full time and Pam took a job working from home to help supplement until the business gets off the ground

Hi Pam....would love to come see your place, visit your alpacas, and get to know you and Jeff! Just say the date!!! Am definately tired of this heat.....the bit of a break we had last week was nice, the alpacas were really enjoying the "cooler" weather....but back to the fans again! Finally got our AlpacaNation site up (after hours and hours of trying to figure out WHAT to say!!)..... it's: sylvesterranchalpacas.com I need to really get my site here on Alpacasocial updated, just seems like we never have enough hours in a day! Again....we'd love to come visit (and see how your new girl is doing, bred to Nova's Gold!) How far of a drive are you from Burleson? Look forward to hearing from you.......

LOL.....is your new girl a white? If she is the one from Idaho that was bred to Nova's Gold...I know her. I was there at Denises when she was delivered....very pretty little thing. Very athletic build, pretty face, nice fleece. She and Nova's Gold should put out a stunning cria!! Congrats!! I think you all will be very pleased with her!!! I was really thrilled with the ribbon from Nationals. I purchased an Avatar son last year from Colorado (sight unseen), as a weanling (big risk) to hopefully use as a herdsire, and he has since taken one 1st place, and 2 second place ribbons at shows. Then his fleece brought in a 3rd place at the Nationals. I'm thrilled!!! His fleece is incredible..........Wow....big storms tonight. I went out with a friend to dinner and "wine tasting" (she and I used to raise calves together!!!)....and the weather came down BIG!! Bit of flooding around the barn, but all else is good. You all get much there? What did Reiling's say about hay in the fall???????? Looking forward to BBQ and getting to know the peanut butter crew better!!!!!!

Hi Pam....sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you....I needed to talk to couple other alpaca friends near me and see what they all planned on doing about hay. I think Reilings are planning on having a truckload brought in this fall, have you talked with them about needing some? Also......I know Susan with Dusty Creek has LARGE square bales that she is selling and may be able to deliver some, not sure. Congrat's on selling Sal..............was it sad to let one go? How exciting to make a sale, tho! Will have to look up pictures of Seraphina! Just got word that Levi, my "future herdsire" (he's not quite ready, he's a year and a half now!) took a third place ribbon for his show fleece at the Nationals. I was thrilled!!! Have finally got all the alpacas moved over to our place, except for a couple off being bred. Wow...it's great to look out and see them! I have SO MUCH to learn! Would love to make a trip up there and see your place, your animals....and get to know you all!! .......once things calm down a bit here (my husband gets back June 27th from Japan)....will be nice to have him here! I'll let you know what I hear on the hay situation. Thanks!!

Congratulations on your two ribbons!!!! Not bad for a big show and a small farm!!! I talked to Denise earlier (Reiling Ranch Alpacs...), who is showing my three alpacas (I'm still in Japan, not moving back until March 23rd). Two of my animals took ribbons, a second and a fourth. My black girl...Tiva, didn't place :( But I can't complain............ I'm thrilled with the two! Ouch....so one of your's "took the judge out"!! LOL....I'm sure they get their share of bruises in the busines!!!! We live in Nagoya....about 5 hours south on the coastline from Tokyo. Were you military? My husband was in the Marines years ago, and did Okinawa too........ Japan's great, but after living here three times for a total of 8 years....I'm ready to call it quits and stay planted in Texas!!!!! Again...congratulations on your wins!!!!

Hi Pam - I agree......., we too, are a little guy, and fingers crossed, hoping we're on the right track too, to get this business started off right. We have three yearlings that all placed at Ark., Ok. and KS...... but again, we're talking much smaller shows. TxOLAN is going to be interesting....it is such a large show, with so much competition, that if any of us "smaller farms" pull in ribbons, then I think that's a good deciding factor that we're definately headed in the right direction!!! My three will be there with the Reiling Ranch Alpacas.... I had to look up on the map to see where Lipan is.....not too far from us, little over an hour (we're in the Burleson area....at least we will be after our move back from Japan this spring!!!). We'll have to get together, talk alpacas, do ranch visits, and trade "secrets"!!! :) Your Tejas Salvia is a cute little man!!! His color is awesome!!!! Good luck at the show....I look forward to hearing how you all did!!!! Jeannie
