Hi Maryann, I have been using the actual PacaTrapper for about 4-5 months and the prototype a few months before that. I focussed attention on a better head restraint system for my Fight O Matic. I knew that I would need a good method of keeping the…

Hi Jami, We have purchased well over 100 alpacas, and about 10 from Canada over the years. We had good experience with all Canadian purchases, except for running into US border control issues. I believe it is more risky, because of potential legal…

Hi Lisa, yes , some females need their fighting teeth cut. since they dont generally get as long and dont tend to fight like boys, not many breeders trim them. But as a breeder, you can slice open your hand on a female with fighten teeth.. Thanks f…

We just used our Tooth-A-Matic for the first time a couple weeks ago. I was SOO scared I was going to "screw-up" I think I was shaking more than the alpaca! I forgot to put on the windshield so Sirah got a good blast of air in the face, but I think…

Rolf, ince it sounds like your country is in the early stages of alpaca farming you should Paint the picture of the future alpaca (fleece utopia). for example " we eventually want alpacas producing 18 micron fleece, which shears 10 lbs of blanket,…

Maryann, As I am just a newbie haven't even purchased my first alpaca yet I had to respond. I sincerely hope and pray that the show arena vs the fiber industry doesn't differ on fineness (fiber)! This seems to have happened to the dog breeds as wel…

Jami, The replies you are getting all make some good points. I would , however, mention that our top 5 BEST purchases we ever made in our 10 year history( over 80 animal purchases) were maidens AND/OR under 6 months of age. Buying maidens are much…

I think you're right. I am nervous about completely relying on the electric fence. We were thinking we would make a smaller area that we put traditional no climb horse fence on the inside of the electric fence and keep them there most of the time. Only let them into the big hay field a few hours a day when we are watching them. At least until we get a feel for our neighborhood critters. The neighbors are all farms with electric fence and barbwire and they all say they don't have a problem with coyotes. But, most of the farms are horse and cows. I don't really see dogs chasing cows around. LOL!

Thank you for the encouragement! I am so excited! The new farm has 5 acres of Electric fenced pasture (Orchard Grass) and A Small Barn. The electric fencing is 3 low strands. The poles are high and I think If I space out 2 more rounds of electric fencing it will be perfect for Alpacas. Maybe even one round could just be uncharged. Had goats before. I just can't wait!
