I would check liver levels. If you have the runny stool and fleece falling out, you might have liver issues. Cindy Lavan Chase Tavern Farm

I cryed hysterically when we delivered our first sold alpacas. Tim gently reminded me of the check in his pocket and that all would be o.k. He was right. I still get upset when some of them leave...notice the word - some. : )

Just want to make sure the word gets out as not to scare people any more --- he was not stolen. There is a conflict between owners. It would be nice if the people who sent the blast email out sent another one saying it was in error. Not fair to the…

Tell us more about yourself!
Since 1993, my husband and I along with our 2 children, Charlie & Peter have been breeding and raising alpacas on our mid-coast ME farm. We have had a herd size as high as 150 but are reducing our size and after 15 years of breeding Championship Huacaya Alpacas (yeah!!) will be refocusing a bit on suri alpacas.

We wil maintain a smaller herd of huacayas as well. Can't give it up that easily after all these years!

Tim and I operate the farm ourselves and focus on the best quality at the best price for our customers! With a lower overhead and on farm breeding program, we are able to offer years of knowledge along with top quality alpacas!

Raising and breeding alpacas over the past 15 years has certainly offered our family not only a lifestyle advantage but a life one in all the lessons learned!

Starting the day at -17

Good morning. Well, at least it's sunny and no wind. I hope it stays that way. We are starting our day at -17. This is the lowest temperature so far in a 24 hr period. It could be worse. Folks who live N of us are -28 and above and I'm not talking about those people in Canada. (Yes, Virginia, there is still 5 hours work of driving N of us in the ME before you get to Canada.)

While we expect a week of below 0 temps at night sometime in the month of January across New England, this is just plain… Continue

Rain and an alpaca farm - not a pretty combo this time of the year

I hate rain! I know it's important - the water cycle and all, but it's annoying when doing chores, makes the lazy alpacas stay inside and poop instead of going outside and the worse - the damp cold rain of fall!

No more grass growing. Just a few straggler leaves still hanging onto the limbs of trees. Why I don't know. They are already dead. Brown everywhere. Ok, some green in the evergreens. But rainy and damp and cold. Maybe it's getting old but day old rained on alpaca poop pick up is no fun… Continue

Yeah! Done for the year and just in time!

Finally, after a week and some days past due, our last female had her cria this am. Last 5 have been girls, but honestly, wouldn't have minded a male cria with this last mating at all.

Temps just hovering around 26 degrees (for all you Southern folks - that's what we call and cold cria am) but should be warming up today to around 40's before rain comes in. The moon last night was as big as a house so figured this am it would happen and it did.

It's official, fall has fallen and winter is on it… Continue

Happy Veterans Day!

Happy Tuesday and Veterans Day to all those past-present-pre military folks out there. I don't think we as a country give this 'holiday' it's true justice these days. 90% of use see this day as a day of shopping and kids off of school, but I wanted to say 'Thank You' to all those on this site who have helped protect our country and the lives of others out there.

Have a great, fun and relaxing day and THANK YOU!

PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE

Just a quick reminder (you probably don't need it) but then maybe a quick poke to get you to VOTE!

Doesn't matter who you vote for (but I'd love to give you information on who I would like to win : ) ) but get out and vote! Many local senate races and meaureses are on bills besides the Presidental election.

Take a snack, take your knitting, take your phone and call your relatives to chit chat - but get out and VOTE!

I'll be harrassing people to VOTE TODAY! I voted 2 weeks ago!

Have a good on… Continue

Hi Cindy! I had the priviledge of being in the ring that your hubby was judging in Syracuse, New York. I was in the 2 yr. Dark Silver Gray Class with Dark Knight's Templar. Templar was awarded 2nd. You'll have to check out the picture I have posted on here. Darlene Reardon used to say he looked like GB's brother (LOL). Oh by the way I was looking at your females tonight and I was wondering is Catwoman still for sale ?
Hope to hear from you soon.

I love the fiber photos you have along the top of your page . . . . . hope someday very soon to be taking those kind of photos on my own farm.

Thanks! Juggernaut is as awesome as ever! Super dense, super bright, super crimpy, with awesome fineness and consistency! Looking forward to taking him to more shows this Spring (and starting his breeding career). Ivana is due here soon with his full brother or sister...so we're excited about that too. Melina is doing great. We've really seen an improvement in her fleece as of late. How's everything at your farm?

Hey Cindy! I hadn't heard from you I emailed you on your Chase Tavern Alpacanation site! But, I hadn't heard from you! Could be my husband misplaced the emails. I hate when they go through my inbox! But, I thought I would try you on here! I am inquiring about peruvian padme! I wanted to see more photos and find out all about her! I see Juggernaut is one hour from my new home in Ohio! I don't know who I will have by way of females in my herd but I know I want them bred to that guy! Good WORK! Email me when you can! thelordliveth@verizon.net
I look forward to hearing from you,

i bred Paco to a TB for a late spring 09 cria & my partners bred him to brown girls & we're anxious to see what he throws. He's a lovely male with small rose grey & silver grey spots in several places on him. His blanket has a very nice hand with big, bold crimp that bundles like a Rastafarian after it's shorn! We bought him sight unseen based on a fiber sample & his pedigree (:

Hi Cindy, just a quick note to tell you that recently at a show in NC I had the priviledge of listening to your husband judge. It was amazing to see a judge take the time to walk to the back of the ring & explain to the participants who did not make the "cut" why they were being dismissed. Too often, actually 99% of the time when participants are dismissed from the ring they have no idea why. The appreciation for the time your husband took to give them that feedback was written all over their faces.

Yes, we are trying the black/grey deal, however, it's really difficult. Of 10 cria, we've only had 1 black (no grey) and only 2 females! We are now going to breed our black donovan son to all the females and hope for the best. He has GREAT density and, at very least, we should get some nice cria.

You know I used to live in Auburn, ME. Lived their for 3 years (doctor) and moved here almost 5 years ago. Liked it there, but way cold!

Hi Cindy! I know you know that giraffe!! She is such a wonderful alpaca; she has given us 3 lovely cria- http://www.tvalpacas.com/pink.html

Here's a story for you: My very first show was Dallas 2006. Tim was judging. To my dismay, my Giacomo only has one testicle! I was crushed and embarassed that I did not notice that fine point! We gelded him, of course. He is now in this Fall's edition of Alpaca Magazine on the page just before the table of contents.
