Alpaca Show question

Hi Maryann, Thank you very much for your very informative response! You answered just about every question I had, and the rest I can find on that website. I didn't take a sample on shearing day becau…

Alpaca Show question

Are there age restrictions on certain shows? I have a BEW male that I would love to show in Owatonna, MN next spring, but seems to me that most of the packies at the show last year were very young. A…

That is just great. I know Sandy, not personally, but from online. I feel like I know her well. Nice lady.
I have a little BEW guy myself and his fleece is amazing.
I think the blue eyes are neat it is too bad there is such a stigma about them. After all they are a fleece animal, who cares what color the eyes are?
Great getting to know you. Talk soon, Tracey

Hello there, just wanted to take a minute to welcome you and offer my friendship. If there is anything that I can do to help you please do not hesitate to ask. The 4-H boys are great fun. Are you planning to add females and start breeding or are you just concentrating on the males for now? Looking forward to getting to know you better. Tracey

I get most of mine from the umbilical cord off the placenta. You need to do this right after the placenta drops. That is my preferred method. If I don't get it at that time I use the tail stick.

If you raise the tail too high, you cut the blood supply. Here's what we do: One person restrains the alpaca. The other has a needle with the guard I use for giving shots. The tail is pumped, much like jacking up a car. That fills the vein. The vein…

OK , I have tried the tail and have had no luck. What am I doing wrong? Center of the tail about a inch up from the base. I have done the ear vein and gotten plenty for the cards but thought the tail may be better.

You can also do the tail vein and, I am told, the ear. I have never tried the ear, but can get whatever I need out of the tail.

I am thinking you mean were on the animal do you draw blood? We have always done it about midway down the neck on the right side but recently we have been doing it from under the tail. This is much easier and fine for DNA since you dont need to have…

Hi Nicki, I too have a BEW male, he is just 4 months old. There is not reason that you could not show him. I do not believe that gelded males can be shown in halter classes. But if there are kids performance classes they can be show. That is more ab…

Nicki, You can show your BEW if he is intact. Be aware that MANY people feel that sending a BEW in the ring is sudden death. It has been said that some judges don't like seeing it because of the genetic trait but the AOBA rules don't disqualify or…
