If anyone is willing to share, I was wondering where you get the most of your sales from; shows, your personal website, alpaca social, alpaca nation, alpaca street, farm visits, festivals and local gatherings, etc.

It is interesting that nobody has replied to this question yet. Does that mean that nobody is getting any sales? (Seems unlikely.) Or does it mean that nobody is willing to share information? (Seems more likely to me.)

Just saw your question. Haven't been to this site in a few days. It's a combination of all things - personal website, shows, farm visits, etc. Nothing sinister. We've worked hard to build a strong reputation of quality and that alone has helped w/sales. Also, honesty about what you are offering. Placements in show ring, our tenure in the business - it's truly a mesh of many avenues and no one marketing technique stands on it's own. If that were the case, eveyone would be using the same one. Timing is huge too. You have to have what people are looking for. So besides all you listed above, I'd add the word patience because you never know what farm visitor you met 5 years ago told their friend who told their friend who is now coming to your farm to buy alpacas!

Now, I have to go out and prepare for the 4th graders who are coming for a field trip and hopefully bringing yarn purchasing parents along! And who knows...if I'm still standing in another 15 years, maybe they themselves will be coming back to buy alpacas!

All of what Cindy said and everything you put in as examples!! LOLOLOLOL

I have always said that ANY farm visit can lead to a sale so keep smiling! Just because the girlscout troop is visiting and you know its not a sale doesn't mean that they wont go home and tell others and those others may be a future sale!

As most know, I am also a HUGE fan of the internet! Getting the word out via internet reaches the most people and the more places your name and farm name are, the better the sales.

It is a balancing act of:
Getting your name out there IE: alpaca shows, art shows, town gatherings, visiting other farms, websites, business cards everywhere, special functions at your farm
Having a eye appealing farm, logo, and website
Background of knowledge of alpacas and being able to speak about it be it on a farm visit, website or in public
Having a versatile herd which enables all kinds of sales from the newbie, experienced or anything in between
Being a Mentor

Hope this helps!!!!!!!!

Since we have yet to offer any alpacas for sale, I can't really answer the question. We did have someone ask multitudes of questions at a show about one of our girls, but they could have just been fishing for information, trying to find out what alpacas cost. We finally said she wasn't for sale and she wasn't. Maybe we were just fishing for what alpacas cost too. We'll let you know where our sales come from once we start selling.

We purchased our alpacas after seeing them at the Virginia State Fair, the AOBA Nationals and several farm visits.

I have not sold an alpaca yet, still building a herd. My products are selling by word of mouth and putting them in shops.
I have worked hard this year with person contact locally.
This year I hope to expand and meet alot of others in the alpaca community by going to shows and festivals.
I am in the process of building my website.
All I can do is continue and pray I make it.
I have a wonderful mentor to help too. Thanks Lisa.

I agree, don't know what's going on. Just asking, not prying. I would be willing to answer if the shoe was on the other foot. Just wondering when I start where to put the majority of my time/energy. oh well.

Hi Jami, I have had luck with seminars. We have about four seminars a year targeting the new breeder. I also use a broker on the East Coast. That is what works for me.
