Hi All:

I have a female cria born September 2009 and a male born in Oct of 2009.  My question is when should I wean them.  I was thinking about the Michigan Show May 1 and 2 but wonder if I should wait a little longer.  I sure do  not want to rush them.  Would letting the moms do the weaning but good to do.  All are doing good.  These are my first babies and I do not want to mess up.

Thanks,

Lois,

We ween at 50 pounds minimum and at least 6 months of age. On our farm, it seems the boys are always a bit harder LOLOL those momma's boys! Most of our moms ween their babies on their own but remember......it takes up to 3 months for milk to dry up then colostrum to come back in for new cria's.

I am going to guess you will have mixed reviews on weening at shows. Some believe get the stress out all at once...a show and weening at the same time...others believe stress is way up to begin with at a show so do weening way before a show, let them relax and then take to the shows.

I am sure you will get more opinions from everyone! Good Luck!

Hi Lois,
I usually wean when the cria are at 60 lbs or 6 months... and it also depends on if the cria are becoming independent. If they are already eating hay and grain AND drinking water... then they are probably ready.
I seperate them during the day and put back with mom at night if i can for about a week. That way you can see how they are reacting to it all.

Then about a week after they are in the weaning pen.... i start working with them on halter. It helps take their minds off of mom.
If you start weaning mid to late March... they should be ready for show by May.
Give me a call if you need any help...

Nan
