Made By Alpaca People For Alpaca People

Does anyone have any advice for this? I paid a couple of animals off at the end of last year and have been waiting for the registration to be transferred to me to no avail. I have gotten a third party involved to try to help, but even though I have all the paperwork to prove I paid these animals off, the previous owner is saying that there is a payment issue. No payment issue, they are paid off!!! Any advice to help me move this along?

Hi Simon,

I am so sorry you are going through this. I wish I knew what to say or do to help you. I have been trying to figure out a way to have an Alpaca & Llama Better Business Bureau for our industry that would perhaps stop this sort of stuff from happening. I hope you can get this resolved ASAP.

Hi Simon,

I'm assuming when you made your payments you paid with a check? If so then you have your proof in your canceled checks. Unless you were making payments with something else? Cash or credit cards?

Maybe the payment issue isn't with you but between the person who sold you the alpacas and the person they purchased them from? I recently heard of a lady who had paid her female off, the female had given her a cria and when she tried to register the cria she wasn't able to as the female hadn't been paid for yet! This is in spite of her having paid the female off.

What does the ARI say? If the alpacas you have purchased are in the sellers name this wouldn't be the case for you. If the ARI's show another farm it may be. The first farm will insist upon being paid before things can proceed.

Good luck!

Don't you have a contract and all your cancelled checks?

If you have contracts and your proof of payment I would think getting an attorney to send out a letter on your behalf might work. We had this issue with a customer that backed out of paying us - it cost a little money but, the customer was told he had a period of time to pay up, or he would loose all the money he had invested and we had the right to sell the animal again. I don't think the ARI likes to get involved, and remember an email saying that they won't legally do anything without charging now but there needs to be some resolution so you can get the animals that are due to you.
Good luck!

I would also contact ARI....... they will under certain issues transfer over registration without signature. It will be a lot of work and time but this might help you out.

Hi Simon,
I just wanted to also say that I'm sorry that you are going through this. I am not going to get into detail, myself and others are victims of this as well. Maryann is correct, contact ARI and they will help you get to the bottom of this. They helped us and others. Another thing you can do, is find out who the original owners or farm that the alpacas belonged to. If you contact them per say you might get to the bottom of the situation. Another thing I would like to tell you is not all alpaca owners are scam artists. Even though we went through a really tough time. We are still in the business and truly love being alpaca farmers. Are we going to be cautious when we purchase again. Definatly! Check out references. We hope this situation gets resolved quickly.
