Made By Alpaca People For Alpaca People

We have a 2 month old cria born on the farm and she is a little doll. In the beginning there were no issues but as time goes on her right front leg is becoming bow legged. She seems to be turning it out from the knee down. I have done b12 shots and physical therapy just trying to straighten it out at least 3 times a week but it does not seem to be getting any better. Any ideas?????

Maryann,
Have you tried ADE & B12 paste? I give that to the "winter" babies to help them soak up the sunshine that barely exists during the winter.

Dawn,
I was hoping you could tell me how much ADE&B12 paste you give your babies? Reason being, I have a litle guy who had a low IGg, received his plasma transfushion. Wouldn't put weight on his back right leg. Took him to Cornell University Hospital (NY). They found an infection in his knee joint. After a week of antibiotics intraveniously, draining & flushing his joint, then when I brought him home another two weeks of antibiotics 2x a day he seems to be doing better but I thought maybe some vitamins would be helpful to him now. What would you suggest?
Thanks for your input!

Hi Maryann,

Here in Oregon we can get leg issues (ricketts) from the lack of sun, so we supplement our cria with Vit AD/E. It really helps a lot. We use the injectible. 1cc/75lbs once a month until legs are straight. Hope I've helped! :)

Hi Maryann,
I have purchased Vitamin AD injectable, 250 ml.
consult with your vet or I also use Dr Cheryl Dewitt in Ohio. She has a working alpaca farm. You can contact her. You may of herd of her. she has a website, google her name.

Hate to be the bearing of bad news, but could be she's just going to have a slight toe out in that leg now that she is maturing and even w/ADE, etc. it is the way it is. It's the horse person in you that it's driving crazy! Heard once of a lady, who had a cria that was 2 days old, slightly bowed out by the photo they sent. She wanted the vet to cast it. The vet was pure equine and while it works in horses I guess, can't imagine so much w/alpacas. Of course the baby was fine in time. There will be a normal degree but if you find it a greater degree than more aggressive approaches may be the answer. Would need to see a photo. And...could be you do nothing now but what you are doing and when she is mature, get more aggressive.
ADE past only admin 1x every 2 weeks. Upload a photo!
