I know we have a lively discussion about times of breeding, but I have an issue with a male we just allowed to breed for the first time. He seems to have an issue that could be either a hernia or he just is ready to go again, Has anyone seen any issues with first time breeders?
Give us more information on what he is doing, IE: getting tired, cant get in good position, falls off, multi breeding and no confirmed pregnancies, what are the symptoms???
His symptoms are his penis became swollen and won't retreat. We ended up taking him into the Vet as home remedies to reduce the swelling did not work. The vet says this is very rare, ended up manually pushing it back in and putting a stitch to tighten up the area so it would remain intac. We don't know if we will be able to breed him again, the vet can't guarantee he will operate correctly
i have never heard of this either(thanks for the heads up on facebook maryann).. are you near a good teaching hospital? if not then dr.evens would speak with your vet, dr. cotton and dr. ruth would also, many larger more experienced alpaca vets would be glad to consult with your own vet. where are you located? honestly i would wait before using him again, get more information, you don't want to damage him, or to pass on anything severe either..
thanks Sandy and Maryann, our vet seems pretty good, as he does specialize in camelids rather than a good old country vet for horses and cows. We are in central Texas. I agree, his breeding days for this year are done, we wouldn't even put him in for a spit test, tomorrow we will return to the vet to have the stiches removed and see what his says, never a dull moment is there?
This is a WILD guess:
There was something that caused the swelling, not specifically related to the male.
If you put him with a maiden, a tough hymen may have been the problem. If it's a huacaya, and the female's tail has lots of fiber, one could have wrapped around the penis.

Rick, she was definitely not a maiden, but the tail hairs could have been an issue even though we move the tail, well, next year will tell for sure , So far, the stitch seems to have worked but again, we will not breed this year again with him.
