Made By Alpaca People For Alpaca People

Just wanted to let everyone know that after much discussion with Alpaca Rosa (who posted here about inducing their girl,) Dr. Jane Dewitt who has much experience on inducing and has been for 2 years now and our own vet, if our maiden Chai doesn't give birth by Thurs. evening, we will be inducing for a Friday birth. She has been huge for a month and is now 21 days past due. Usually not a big deal for us but being a maiden, been huge for a month now and becoming very uncomfortable, we believe this is the best thing for her. The vet will be here for the birth if there are any issues. I am scared to death!

Wow, 20 hours later !! I know they said 12-14 hours when they induced my daughter too... but it was about 8 hours after that she gave birth. I bet you will be up most of the night watching anyway.

ITS A GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 25 hours and 20 minutes after inducing, our Chai gave birth to a 14 pound, strong as an ox, little girl. Took 45 minutes to get head and legs out but with a bit of help, we got the shoulders out and she finally came out! Chai is a GREAT mom with plenty of milk and baby was cushed in 3 minutes and eating within 2 hours and hasnt stopped since. We are so sorry about the power surge then got back up and running only to have MAJOR issues with 2 cria that had allergic reaction to cd & t shots. It was horrible. In the middle of 2 cria in the house and in my tub, Chai lays out on her side. With SO MUCH GREAT HELP, we had 2 people in the house with the crias, one out with Chai and me running back and forth. I am posting out next live radio show for next Sun., will give all the details and so much more to talk about!!!! I will post pics soon as well! Happy Mothers day all!!!!!!

We just had another successful birth of an induced cria. Our girl was at day 345 when we induced. Exactly 24 hours from injection .........we got a healthy 16lb girl. Our attitude is this: Day 345-350 if the dam looks huge, its hot out, we know exact breeding date, we know the vet will be in town, we are gonna induce. I will continue to post when we do induce so that other breeders can start gaining confidence and learn about inducing.

We have started to induce more regularly because it just makes too much sense to us. WE dont prescribe to "leave Mother Nature alone" theorists. Been there , done that, with several long term pregnancies ending in still borns. Mother Nature kills.

Im not advocating for others but it sure works for us.

Don,

Congratss!!!!!! Thank you so much for posting.
A clients maiden was 360 days when she gave birth (on a Friday and about 3 wks after we induced Chia). 17.4 pounds and an extremely rough birth. We almost lost him and placenta birthed right behind almost crushing him. We had discussed inducing with the vet that week and decided to wait it out over the weekend and do it on that Monday. If she hadnt given birth on that Friday, I will confidently say that we would have lost the cria over the weekend. I believe the placenta would have detached and we would have had a lose or that mom would have had a more difficult time than she did with the heat.
Plus, thank goodness I was here. So many things play into making the final call but the more info we put out there, the more breeders may find other options.

Thought for the day: Are we flirting with disaster and mother nature? Someone told me that now with EVERY pregnant human, doctors induce at 11 1/2 months no matter what. Ok you human moms out there, let me know if thats true!!! If it is the truth, whats good for humans is good enough for my pacas!!!!

Thanks again!!!!!

Maryann,

congrats to you on ANOTHER successful and life saving induction! We have now been involved with about a dozen of these inductions and all worked out beautifully. We personally have done 3 of ours over the last 8 months or so. Until somebody can show me proof that this is bad, we will continue saving the lives of our crias in longterm gestation situations. Last year, as you know, we had 3 still borns from long term gestations...sheesh I cannot believe the kahunas on these breeders that can sit there and take THAT kind of chance! I guess we all learn from our experiences.
I will be writing an article about induction on our Blog, the alpacaguy, very soon.

Hi all, I see that in all these cases of yours, the female was 'big' and clearly carrying a big cria. We have a slightly different situation...

We have a girl that was due in early July (I believe, I don't have my breeding record with me at the moment) and didn't seem to show at all. In the next few weeks her belly has grown and the cria is finally clearly visible moving around. But she is showing no signs of getting 'close' like the cria dropping low & towards the hips, etc. She is now about 2 1/2 months overdue (again, this is somewhat an estimate, since I don't have my book with me). Other females bred at the same time have had their crias. She was bought bred, so we don't have any further details, but the breeder is confident about her breed date.

We had lost a female that was four weeks overdue a couple years ago due to a dystocia with a huge cria. So, I am curious about inducing. However, we know that alpacas under stress can suspend gestation for several weeks and she was transported during pregnancy. How long is too long? Do you base inducement more on the signs that the female is giving rather than duration? I don't want to force the issue and have a premature cria.

I appreciate comments.

Hi Mary,
Great to see you on this forum - lots of good thoughts and lots of different opinions.... not that any are better than others, just different senerio's. Our vet has always said the babies will come when they are ready. We had one girl (Grahm) that went just shy of 13 months (by two days) and the cria was only about 13 1/2 pounds so inducing her would have resulted in a very small cria. I think that for the most part, the females "know" when they are suppose to deliver and when those cria's are done "cooking" - It was a real long baby watch (as you know) but I am glad we did not push the issue and deliver her sooner. She was only bred one time so we know that the date we had was good. Another thing to think about - what if the people you bought her from mixed up the breeding dates and they gave you the wrong one? If they are not breed with your watchful eye, you can only go on what information is given to you. If she doesn't look like like she is ready to burst I would leave her alone. Just my .2 cents worth.

I have to agree with Janet.

The biggest issue with inducing is the breeding date. If you are not 100% certain on the breeding date, (and for us that means my own breedings on our farm) I wouldnt do anything. 2 1/2 months over due is not right at all so, she either she bred later, bred but didnt take and she is just getting a bit pudgy because its summer or she may have a retained CL and her body is telling her she is pregnant, showing signs but she really isnt.

If she is content, eating, drinking, showing no signs of stress and being her "usual" self, I would let her be. Good Luck and keep us up to date!
