Made By Alpaca People For Alpaca People

Hi all I just wanted to share a few pictures of the Cria Cozy ( coat) that I made today. Our little guy really seems to be cold quite a bit. I have put fleece sweatshirts on him and he still seems to be shivering. Yes good ole' Michigan is cold in the winter ( or half of the year) but I did not notice the shivering with Rosie last year and she was an August baby as well.
Well I came up with a super warm cover up. I took some fleece fabric and cut out a shape sewed the sides together. I then stuffed it with all of my scrap fleece from shearing, darted it in a few spots to hold the fleece in place. sewed the front shut so it goes over his head and put a strap under the belly so it can be buttoned. It might look a little funny but it seems to be keeping him warm.

Thanks Nancy, It is doing it's job!

That is a good question Donna. I had not thought of that as I was just wanting to get something warm on the little guy. It is working well so far. I did have to make an adjustment with the strap , I had it a little too loose so I added a button on the side to tighten it. Probably Velcro would work better. But no more shivering, and it was very cold here today.

Nancy,

I am sure it will be like down jackets and throw a tennis ball or sneaker in the washer and dryer and that may be enough to keep it fluffy!!!

I am also hearing that they do loose a lot of warmth on the legs. Maybe as others have suggested, a 2 or 3t long sleeve shirt under his cozy if it gets really cold!

You know that is a great point Maryann, I was actually thinking of trying another design that entends down the legs. At least the front legs.
Nothing ventured notheing gained.
Who knows when I am done experimenting I may have a hot seller!!!! Hope all is going well with you.

Thanks all. It really was not hard to do. I bought the polar fleece. I layed two pieces together and cut out what I hoped was going to be the right shape. Sewed three of the sides together, stuffed it with some scrap fleece from shearing and tacked that in a few places to try to hold it together. He has not shivered since he has been wearing it and we have had some very cold windy weather. I was also reading another post that had concerns about the fiber wearing off from the coat rubbing. I have not noticed that with this. It is very soft and doing it's job quite well. Could be the latest Cria Craze!!!

Boy that looks nice and comfy, with all my cria coat problems you could market that and I certainly would buy one. How is it held on under the stomach?

I have 2 old sleeping bags that I am seriously thinking about converting to adult coats!
I am bringing in one of them tonight when I get done with chores and using it for a pattern. Will let you know ho it goes!

WE have success!
I brought in one of the adult coats and used it as a pattern. I cut out the new coat and hemmed the edges.
Now all I need is some way of keeping it attatched. Headed to the sewing shop for some webbing and velcro :)
