Alpacas and health issues
My husband has cancer and at the present time has hospice attending his needs. Back in April I took him to a farm to visit. There were 40 alpacas there and several llamas. The owner would halter and lead them to the car to visit. Needless to say he really enjoyed himself. Then I got this idea to fence off half our property and buy some alpaca. Needless to say 4 alpaca and one llama later we have a "crew". Hospice was here on Friday and said there is a MAJOR improvement in his health. His nurse said that everytime she visits my husband spends several minutes talking about the animals. He was even able to get out and help me with the "crew" today for a few minutes.
I never knew 6 months ago that God would send such wonderful animals into our lives. I will forever be grateful for the added time they have given my husband.

We alpaca owners/breeders/farmers (whatever you want to call us) know the effect these wonderful creatures have on us. I know most animals can help with "healing" people, but there is something very special about our alpacas. Its good to hear your husband is doing so well. God works in mysterious ways! Donna

So glad to hear that your husband has improved! These wonderful alpaca creatures sure do capture your heart!
as a suggestion ... is it possible that one or more are halter trained? When your husband is less ambulatory, they can be led into houses and 'visit' with people. Most of the time they will wait and 'go potty' again when they get back outside. So, in the event that in the future, your husband can't quite manage a visist to the barn.... please remember that they can still come and visit him!

Thanks for sharing this great story! So sorry to hear of the sickness that you and your husband are dealing with but am so glad to hear the alpacas have added some happiness to his day. Keep it up and good luck with the alpacas and llamas - we all enjoy the lifestyle we have with these great animals!

You and your husband have now experienced engaged occupation, which is the crux of Occupational Therapy, my profession.
I have used my alpacas as a therapeutic modality for several years now. Use of alpacas facilitated by an OT is extremely beneficial with children, particularly children with autism.
